Awards & grants

The Society has a range of financial awards and travel grants. The Society also awards a C.A. Wright medal annually, in recognition of outstanding contribution to Parasitology.

Details of each of these schemes and how to apply for them are given below.

Current awards/travel grants

Following the success of ICOPA XI in Glasgow, the BSP has allocated funds generated from that meeting to encourage attendance at ICOPA XII in Melbourne, Australia, during 15th-20th August 2010.  The Society recognises that our student members will require additional support to travel to this important scientific conference and has therefore established an award scheme to provide funding to PhD students who will be presenting their work. Student members can apply for up to £500 towards the cost of their attendance and all awards will be allocated on a competitive basis.

Applicants should note the following rules:

  1. Applicants must have been members of the BSP for at least six months at the time of application.
  2. Applicants must be registered PhD students and in the 2nd or 3rd year of a PhD project.
  3. The applicant must be submitting an abstract to present an oral paper or poster at the conference.
  4. Successful applicants will be expected to prepare a meeting report for publication in Parasitology News.
  5. The maximum value of each award is £500 and will be payable only on the production of receipts for expenditure.
  6. The financial support of the BSP should be acknowledged in any talk or poster presentation made by the student at the meeting.
  7. Any award is made entirely at the discretion of the BSP Council.
  8. No correspondence will be entered into regarding unsuccessful applications or the level of award where applications are successful.
  9. Applications should include a completed form (see below), a copy of the applicant's CV and a letter of support from the applicant's PhD supervisor.

The deadline for receipt of all applications will be 31st January 2010.  No applications received after this date will considered. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by end March 2010.

C.A. Wright Memorial Medal

The CA Wright medal has been given annually since 1985 to a member of the BSP to recognise their outstanding contribution to the discipline of parasitology. The recipient is a scientist in mid-career who, it is considered, will confirm their already outstanding achievements to become a truly distinguished future leader of their field.

This sentiment is in keeping with the encouragement of younger parasitologists by Chris Wright, Director of the Experimental Taxonomy Unit at the Natural History Museum, London, UK and the Society's President at the time of his untimely death in 1983, and in whose memory a commemorative medal was instigated.

Nominations for the 2010 CA Wright Medal are now open. Nominations can be made at any time up to the closing date in January 10.

The nomination procedure for the CA Wright medal has been simplified. Nominations must be made in writing to the Hon General Secretary, presenting a case for the awarding of the medal.
