Ann Bishop Award

This award aims to give a recently qualified parasitologist the opportunity to work in and/or visit an area where the subject of their research is endemic. It is aimed at PhD students or workers who have recently (within the last 2 years) completed their PhD.

For all applications received after 1st January 2009, awardees must have been a member of the society for at least 6 months at the time of application.

Applications are being accepted for the 2010 award. The deadline for receipt of applications is 13th January 2010.

This annual award was instituted in 1992 in memory of Ann Bishop, to give a recently qualified parasitologist the opportunity to work in and/or visit an area where the subject of their research is endemic. The intention of the Award scheme is to broaden the horizons of laboratory-based workers, especially those who would not necessarily otherwise be able to gain field experience. Applications consonant with this intention are particularly encouraged.

A single Ann Bishop award will be made each year but Council will only make an award when an application of great merit is received. The purpose of the Award will be to provide members with funds to allow travel in pursuit of their academic interests in parasitology, providing an opportunity to undertake field research, visit overseas institutions and/or visit endemic areas of disease.

Applicants should be PhD students in their final year of study or should have recently (within the last 2 years) completed their PhD. Applicants should be BSP members at the time of application. The Society will provide support of up to £2000 which should cover the costs of travel and subsistence for not less than two weeks. Successful applicants will be expected to provide a report on their trip for publication in Parasitology News.

Applications for The Ann Bishop award should be sent to the Hon Treasurer by the given deadline. Council will consider applications at its January meeting and applicants will be notified of the outcome by the end of January.

Applications should include:

  1. A CV of the applicant (on a single A4 page) which should include the applicant's BSP membership number and details of any other financial support received from the Society.
  2. A description (on a single A4 page) of the proposed work including a description of how the proposed work relates to the applicants current project and an outline of the anticipated outputs of the work.
  3. Signed letters of support from the supervisor (who should also be a BSP member) and from the host institution.
  4. A budget for the proposed trip including details of the cost of travel, accommodation and subsistence. The Ann Bishop award is intended to cover only the costs incurred by the applicant and does not cover any research costs.
  5. A signed and dated declaration stating: "I have read and understood the conditions of the award".

The letter of support from the host institution should include confirmation that adequate support for the work will be provided. The applicant will also need to demonstrate that all appropriate formalities (e.g. government clearance) can be completed to allow the visit to go ahead. If clinical activities are planned ethical clearance must be obtained before making the application.

Disclaimer: The Award is made on the express condition that, save only as may be required by applicable law, the Society is not under any legal liability whatsoever that may arise from act or omission by the recipient or any third party.

BSP Autumn Symposium - Progress in Paediatric Parasitology
23rd September 2010

Durham University

The BSP Autumn Symposium 2010 will be held on 23rd -24th September 2010 at Durham University's Queens Campus in Stockton on Tees. Run in conjunction with the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, we are stretching the programme over 2 days beginning after lunch on the 23rd and finishing after lunch on the 24th. This approach is being taken to allow people travelling from a distance to spend just one night away from home whilst being able to attend an evening social event. The talks will be given by invited speakers and we will also run a poster session.
