Garnham Expeditionary Scholarship

This award aims to give parasitologists at an early stage in their careers (undergraduates or PhD students) the opportunity to undertake field studies in parasitology. It is particularly aimed at candidates who wish to undertake studies under demanding conditions.

For all applications received after 1st January 2009, awardees must have been a member of the society for at least 6 months at the time of application.

The deadline for receipt of applications for the 2010 award is 13th January 2010.

Professor Cyril Garnham died on Christmas Day 1994. The BSP Council felt that a Society award should be instituted in his memory. One of his endearing idiosyncrasies was to send bright students to do difficult fieldwork in distant places, but his choices were sufficiently astute, in both people and projects, that notable careers in parasitology often resulted. With this in mind, The Garnham Expeditionary Scholarship was created in 1996. The intention of this scholarship is to promote field parasitology (collection of data or samples) under any difficult conditions. Many of the field projects which Garnham initiated were in the tropics but field expeditions need not be limited to these regions; any parasitological expedition that involves working or living under demanding conditions will be considered.

A single Garnham Expeditionary Scholarship will be available each year, but Council will only make an award when an application of great merit is received. Applicants at an early stage of their interest in parasitology (undergraduates or PhD students in their first or second years of study) are especially encouraged. Applicants need not be members of the BSP but must have a written letter of support from a staff member of their Institution who is a BSP member. The Society will provide support of up to 1,000. Successful applicants will be expected to provide a report on their expedition for publication in Parasitology News.

Applications for The Garnham Expeditionary Scholarship should be sent to the Hon. Treasurer by the given deadline. Council will consider applications at its January meeting and applicants will be notified of the outcome by the end of January. Applications should include:

  1. A CV of the applicant (on a single A4 page).
  2. A description (on a single A4 page) of the proposed project.
  3. A letter of support from a colleague (who must be a BSP member) and from the host institution.
  4. A budget for the proposed trip including details of the cost of travel, accommodation and subsistence.
  5. A signed and dated declaration stating, "I have read and understood the conditions of the award".

The letter of support from the host institution should include confirmation that adequate support for the work will be provided. The applicant will also need to demonstrate that all appropriate formalities (e.g. Government clearance) can be completed to allow the visit to go ahead. If clinical activities are planned ethical clearance must be obtained before making the application.

Disclaimer: The Award is made on the express condition that, save only as may be required by applicable law, the Society is not under any legal liability whatsoever that may arise from act or omission by the recipient or any third party.

BSP Autumn Symposium - Progress in Paediatric Parasitology
23rd September 2010

Durham University

The BSP Autumn Symposium 2010 will be held on 23rd -24th September 2010 at Durham University's Queens Campus in Stockton on Tees. Run in conjunction with the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, we are stretching the programme over 2 days beginning after lunch on the 23rd and finishing after lunch on the 24th. This approach is being taken to allow people travelling from a distance to spend just one night away from home whilst being able to attend an evening social event. The talks will be given by invited speakers and we will also run a poster session.
