About the BSP - The Council

Dr Angela Mousley

Honorary Treasurer

Research Interests

Parasitology: Structural and functional characterisation of novel endectocide targets for parasite/pest control including neuropeptides, G-protein coupled receptors, signalling pathways (FMRFamide-like peptides, neuropeptide-like proteins, neuropeptide F, allatostatins, myokinins, leucokinins, tachykinins), and signal termination peptidases (cysteine endoproteases of the papain family).

Neurobiology: Molecular and pharmacological characterization, and comparative expression analyses of vertebrate neuropeptide signalling molecules and cognate receptors; NPY, Y receptors, RFamides (PQRFamides, LPxRFamides, prolactin-releasing peptides, metastatins).

Research Relevance: The current control strategies for parasites of humans and animals relies on only a few frontline drugs [benzimidazoles, levamisole, macrocyclic lactones] that have been overused and misused since entering the market. Consequently there is now global resistance in parasites to all available chemical classes of drugs such that sustained control in the future will ultimately depend on the discovery/development of anthelmintics with novel modes of action. Structural, physiological and expression data are emerging that point to aspects of the neuropeptide signalling system as strong drug target candidates.

BSP Autumn Symposium - Progress in Paediatric Parasitology
23rd September 2010

Durham University

The BSP Autumn Symposium 2010 will be held on 23rd -24th September 2010 at Durham University's Queens Campus in Stockton on Tees. Run in conjunction with the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, we are stretching the programme over 2 days beginning after lunch on the 23rd and finishing after lunch on the 24th. This approach is being taken to allow people travelling from a distance to spend just one night away from home whilst being able to attend an evening social event. The talks will be given by invited speakers and we will also run a poster session.
